HewlettPackard has used its considerable expertise as a computer manufacturer to introduce improvements into the iPAQ310 that make the company’s first dedicated GPS navigation device astand out from the crowd, but help raise the bar for portable GPS navigators in general. The iPAQ’s processor is much more powerful than any portable device out there right now. It uses a SiRFtitan 600MHz dual core processor with 128Mb of onboard RAM, compared to the 400MHz SIRF III and 64Mb of RAM in other high-end portable GPS navigators. This means faster route calculations and re-routing. It also means more processing power for the graphics display, which leads us to one of the other things that makes the iPAQ310 unique. An Immersive, High-Definition, Navigation Experience The iPAQ-310’s advanced 3D navigation system provides stunning visuals. For select cities, rather than the simple lines and color blocks you see on other navigators, you get actual 3-D models of buildings in space. Nothing else puts you in space and gives you a real feel for where you are and where you need to go than this device. Panning and zooming are smoother and faster. Plus, the 4.3-inch (diagonally) widescreen display has far better resolution than competitive models, 800 x 480 pixels compared to the current standard 420 x 272 pixels, which means all of those 3D maps are clear and detailed.

You can even synch up with your Microsoft Outlook address book to create custom points of interest based on personal or corporate contact information. You can upload and share your travel plans for others to use and customize, or find trip plans online to help you explore along the way or at your destination.

The Curve is fashioned in a liquid silver finish with chrome highlights and subtly curving corners. Measuring 4.2 x 2.4 inches, the Curve is just as slim as the Pearl (0.6 inches) and weighs in at 3.9 ounces–just 0.7 ounces heavier than its predecessor. It features a bright 2.5-inch color TFT screen that provides 65,000 colors and a 320 x 240-pixel resolution, and it includes a light-sensing feature that automatically adjusts backlighting for indoor, outdoor and dark environments. Like the BlackBerry 8800, the Curve includes a trackball navigation system located on the top of the QWERTY keypad, and it also features an integrated spell checker with a customizable dictionary to help maintain accuracy while on the go. It has 64 MB of internal ROM memory, and is expandable using MicroSD memory cards. The battery provides up to 4 hours (240 minutes) of talk time and up to 17 days (408 hours) of standby time.

You can snap vivid photos (though no video) using the 2-megapixel camera on the back of the Curve, which also features a 5x digital zoom, built-in flash, self-portrait mirror and full screen viewfinder. It can capture images in up to three picture quality and size resolutions that can be shared instantly by email, MMS or BlackBerry Messenger, or even uploaded to your Flickr account with the Yahoo! Go service. Photos can also be immediately set as a unique caller ID or Home Screen image. You can edit photos and create albums within the Curve using the PhotoSuite application. Pictures can be cropped, rotated and straightened, and flaws can be fixed by removing redeye or changing the brightness, contrast, and saturation levels.

Listen to your favorite music and watch downloaded videos using the included stereo headset, or use an optional wireless headphone thanks to the Curve’s support for the Bluetooth stereo audio profile (A2DP/AVRCP). The Curve is compatible with a wide variety of file formats, including MP3, WMA and AAC/AAC+/eAAC+ audio and WMV, MPEG4 and H.263 video. Dedicated volume controls are conveniently located on the side of the handset.

With the Voice-Activated Dialing (VAD) feature, you can initiate a call just by telling the Curve who to call from your contact list–either via the integrated speakerphone or using an optional Bluetooth wireless headset. Phone Features
Weighing just 3.38 ounces and just 0.55 inches thin, the Pearl 8300 manages to fit a QWERTY keyboard onto the handset’s slim frame. Each button on the keyboard shares two letters and the unit automatically determines which letter is the intended one based on what it predicts you are trying to spell. This unique predictive text technology, known as SureType, makes the Pearl 8300’s diminutive size possible. SureType also learns the words you use most often, further enhancing your typing speed.

It sports a large 240 x 260 screen that supports over 65,000 colors–plenty of real estate to view your e-mails, Web browser content, messaging sessions, and attachments. This APS-C size sensor (22.2 x 14.8mm) has the same 3:2 ratio as film cameras, enabling an effective angle of view that is 1.6x the normal EF lens focal length. Responsive and Reliable
The EOS Digital Rebel XTi has a brilliant 2.5-inch LCD monitor with approximately 230,000 pixels. Also used in Canon’s Professional EOS SLRs, this screen displays more than images. Shooting information and playback are both displayed on the LCD, so that the photographer can see all of the shooting information simultaneously on one screen. Not only can images be viewed larger than on the Digital Rebel XT, they can be viewed at a greater angle (160 degrees) than many other conventional LCD monitors.

Display Off Sensor
When composing images, the Digital Rebel XTi’s external display turns off automatically thanks to the newly developed Display Off Sensor. This new sensor detects the photographer’s face against the back panel of the camera, and turns the screen off to prevent the LCD monitor’s brightness from disturbing the photographer’s eye while looking through the viewfinder.

Speedy Operation
With a startup time of 0.2 seconds, the EOS Digital Rebel XTi is ready to go the instant it’s brought to the eye. And the Digital Rebel XTi’s shutter can record images as fast as 1/4000 seconds and as long as 30 seconds, plus bulb at up to 3 frames per second (fps) for 27 consecutive shots. EOS Utility (Version 1.1) for Macintosh or Windows handles the connection between the camera and computer, whenever they’re connected via USB. It allows remote-controlled shooting from the computer, handles downloading of images from the camera to the computer, and allows seamless linking to either Canon’s ZoomBrowser/ImageBrowser or Digital Photo Professional software once images have been copied to the hard drive. Furthermore, it’s used to upload settings back into a USB-connected camera.

ZoomBrowser EX (Version 5.7) for Windows and ImageBrowser (Version 5.7) for Mac OS X are the easy, user-friendly options for viewing and editing of JPEG and even RAW image files. Both allow viewing of numerous types of images including finished TIFF and BMP files. Both also have a variety of search options for finding images, allow re-naming of single images or batches of files, and offer a variety of options for printing without using a separate image-editing program.

Dependable for Cleaning the Sensor
The EOS Digital Rebel XTi not only sports a newly refined body with better ergonomics and a new grip, but it also has some of Canon’s most advanced improvements in dust reduction. No matter how careful photographers may be to change lenses in dust free areas and to keep their equipment as clean as possible, dust often ends up on their cameras’ sensors, creating distracting spots on recorded images. The Digital Rebel XTi’s integrated hardware and software solutions make trouble with dust a thing of the past. Self Cleaning Sensor Unit

Dust Delete Data Detection
Dust that has been missed by the Integrated Self Cleaning Sensor Unit can also be erased with software included in Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Version 2.2. Booyah Guy (NYC, NY) - See all my reviewsI am a self-professed gadget addict, so the Nokia N800 was something I had to get my hands on. Once I picked it up, there was no going back. I plunked down by cash and started fooling around. Here are the pros and cons as I see them. As of now, there is no PC sync, so this is not really intended as a substitute for a PDA — however I use my company’s web-based intranet (webexone) to keep of all of my appointments and N800 works flawlessly. It appears that somebody should be able to code some kind of sync for the PIM programs that exist for the opensource Maemo (Nokia’s brand of embedded Linux, which also was used on the N770) — however, I’m not sure whether such programs, with Mac OS X or Windows synching capabilities would match the gnu-ethos of this product. A few things I can suggest, based on my experience: 1) Invest in a good case for this device. And if you are going to use it as a media player at the gym, be careful that the device for which you forked over four hundred clams doesn’t go flying. Mine did, suffered nary a scratch (thanks to a solid build quality) — but this thing has a gorgeous screen that just seems to cry out “crack me!” 2) Invest in bluetooth keyboard for writing long emails. The Nokia SU-8W was my weapon of choice. It’s pretty good too — I have a few nitpicks, though: The Fn button is needed to activate the number keys (which are basically merged with the top row of the “QWERTY” row of keys (Q=1, W=2, etc). Once you click on Fn it stays on — which can be a bit maddening at first. because if you subsequently hit those letter keys, they will still appear as numbers until you deactivate the Fn. You might prefer another keyboard, but I’ve since grown used to this one. Also — it seems that when multiple bluetooth devices are used at once (like dial up networking over your cell plus the keyboard) that the keyboard becomes very sensitive, and if you don’t tap carefully, aalll offf youuurr texxxttt might loook likkke thhisss. This is avoided by typing carefully, but I’m still checking to see if this is an issue that can be addressed in another way. All in all, I’m very pleased with my purchase. I justified it as a business expense, and as such I am able to deduct it — which amounts to a pretty solid defacto discount. I was able to use my existing 2 GB SD cards to expand the memory by 4 GB. Pretty funny when I recall that my first Mac had an external hard drive with a whopping 20 MB — the hard drive cost me more than this device! Battery life is also very good. I get about 3 hours of solid surfing via wifi, and about 5 hours via bluetooth. If I leave the phone in standby I can still be alerted of instant messages via GAIM and the power will last for days. I go to work with a full charge and leave work with a full charge. Installing programs, such as GAIM is a snap once you add the repository urls to your application manager. Once you do, the system maintains a catalog of all of the available programs and you simply click to install a ton of programs. The screen on this phone is amazing. If your vision supports it, you can actually view a regular web page at 800×400 pixels. You can zoom in on text fairly easily by using the rocker buttons on the top of the device. Only on one occassion did I need to install a prerequisite program (Maemo Mapper) because GAIM (open source instant messenger, which rocks BTW) was dependent on one of the same files installed with the mapper. Another cool thing about this gadget (my phone is a PPC 6700) is that virtually all of the software is free. For my phone, I’ve spent hundreds just trying to get some decent functionality. The Opera browser rules and the few sites I cannot access with Opera can be opened with Mozilla (MiniMo). Now, if someone just ports over a lite version of Open Office I’ll be in gadget junkie heaven. As of this writing, the Maemo (Nokia’s Linux port) version of Abiword (a full word processor) has not been ported to the N800 yet. It sounds like it’s just a matter of days or weeks. Anyhow, this device does a lot of the kinds of things that the coming Apple iPhone is supposed to do well. In that regard, it’s kind of like a test platform for Nokia’s next generation of phones. The open source community is very supportive and if Nokia ever decides to release a phone running the Maemo platform, they will give Apple a serious run for its money. You can do everything via this device, and if you run into something it cannot handle, you can use it to log in to a PC somewhere via VNC. The Nokia N800 is an awesome platform. The built-in video conferencing is usable, but it’s no replacement for desktop video conferencing solutions — however it was actually better than some desktop programs I’ve tested. A version of Skype is rumored to be on its way (Gizmo Project already works perfectly). If that version of skype supports video, look to the Nokia N800 to compete heavily with the slew of skype phones (such as the Netgear SPH101, which I sold once I got this bad boy) since you can use the browser to log in to any public hotspot (most “skype phones” do not allow this). 2/10/07: Nokia just released a small application that activates a previously “undeclared” feature in this device — an FM radio. Kind of a cool easter egg! I wonder what other surprises they have in store — a recent teardown report showed that the USB port is capable of providing juice to other devices — something that is not currently supported but that seems possible based on the innards of the N800.

The ZOOM H2 is an amazing recording device that is the size of a deck of cards, has no moving parts, makes high quality recordings, is easy to use and is surprisingly inexpensive.  You can record at CD quality(.wav) or at slightly lower levels (MP3). Two AA batteries are good for four hours of recording as long as your SD memory card is up to the task. A click of a button starts the recording and clicking it again stops it. With a click of another button you determine which of the four excellent built-in microphones you want to use for the desired stereo effect or for the quadrophonic mode. The included manual is well written and informative. For those who don’t like to read manuals, there is a quick-guide which is more than adequate for many of your recording needs,
