The best method of ‘breaking-in’ jeans remains the same: buy them with a snug fit, wear them new, jump into a hot tub or bath. Then go for a swim and allow them to dry-on, for a personal fit.
The concept of wearing jeans in water dates back to their very beginning and continues today. Levi’s were originally produced in only three sizes, and the wearer would jump into a body of water like a creek, a pond, or a horse trough, to shrink them to fit as snug as a glove. Today, jeans are available in a variety of styles, from tight to loose fit, and are sold either pre-washed or shrink-to-fit and rigid.
This is the jean that made Levi-Strauss famous. Arriving stiff and a deep indigo color when new, these will take months or years to get broken in, at which point they will fit like a second skin and be faded to a mellow lighter blue. These are shrink-to-fit pants, which means you will buy a size larger than your actual measurements. If you want to accelerate the breaking-in process, you should wash them in hot water, cold rinse, and then put them in a hot dryer for a while. The cut of these pants is pretty tight, not at all baggy like some people find fashionable today. They are cut to be worn at (or quite close to) your waist, not down on your hips like lots of newer styles. So measure your actual waist when calculating the size to order, unless you want them to fall off (in which case you probably shouldn’t be buying 501 shrink-to-fit anyway). I own a couple of pairs, both well broken-in, and they’re just about my favorite pants. There’s just nothing like a nicely broken in pair of 501s to fit like no other jeans can.
