Norton Ghost 12.0 [OLD VERSION]

Let’s protect your computer with Norton Ghost™ 12.0 by the advanced backup and recovery hard drive backup ghost hard Norton software. Symantec decided to drop a release and skip a year, missing version 11 altogether. Including with the backup protection you expect, with powerful new features such as enhanced performance, available one-to-one remote management, Lights-Out Restore capability, and more.

Norton Ghost 12.0 is ready when you need to recover just restoring individual files or your entire system. The included Software Recovery Disk allows you to start your computer, scan for viruses or hard disk errors, and start the recovery process even if your operating system won’t start.

The improved advanced tools included in Norton Ghost 12.0, you can take your protection to the next level, after installation back-ups can be taken straight away, with the option of My Documents, Program Files, plus temporary files being backed up separately from the OS and for the first time. Creating more usefulness rather than a tool for just backing up the OS.

Including with the remote management can back up other computers on your network that have Norton Ghost 12.0 installed and Lights-Out Restore lets you install the Software Recovery Environment on your hard-disk so you’ll always be ready to recover. If you have a Maxtor hard drive or Hard drive external ghost hard Norton, you can back up your computer with the push of a button. No need to start Norton Ghost.

Manually adjust the effect of a running backup on the performance of your computer to better match your needs at the moment. This feature is especially useful if you are working on your computer and don’t want the backup process to slow you down.
Buy hard drive recovery software, if you know the demographics of your network traffic, you can now set network throttling to prevent network overload

A plethora of file extensions can be recognized and individually backed up. From our testing and random selections, there isn’t one that wasn’t included. Ideal seeing as you can now search in recovery points for your files and their various iterations. All from Google Desktop, if installed, via a plug-in that comes with the software. Technology for this derives from; yep you’ve guessed it, Symantec Backup Exec Retrieve - a fine product from the VERITAS side of the business.

You can choose the back up types by the Norton Ghost 12.0, with the full system (disk image) or specific files and folders. Backups include encryption and error checking to help keep your data safe and sound, while compression, incremental backups, and automatic backup file management minimizes storage space (if you have a mixtor hard drive, it is very easy to back up files).

    192/24 digital-to-analog converters

    DTS 5.1 Neo:6
DTS Neo:6 5.1 is an advanced matrix decoder that takes any two-channel source (say, a VHS tape, a television broadcast, a CD or a DVD) and expands it into a surround sound field for a 5.1 system. It also provides separate, optimized modes for stereo music materials and matrix surround motion picture soundtracks.

    CinemaFILTER
The tonal balance of a film soundtrack can be edgy and bright when played back over audio equipment in your home—this is because film soundtracks are designed to be played back in large theaters, using commercial equipment. Onkyo has developed its own solution that restores the correct tonal balance of a movie soundtrack in the smaller environs of your home theater.

    Dolby Digital / Pro-Logic II

This creates a realistic surround environment from a two-channel source, such as CD, Tape, FM Radio, etc.

    RI (Remote Interactive)
With Onkyo’s exclusive RI (Remote Interactive) system capability, you can integrate and operate all compatible components through a single remote control. What’s more, RI capability enables you to simply connect the iPod® to your receiver through Onkyo’s RI Dock for the iPod (DS-A1). Your iPod effectively becomes another Onkyo component from which you can relish a fuller sound that just can’t be experienced through headphones. RI capability will also give you remote operability of your iPod for hands-off control over your digital music.

  • For people looking to step up to full 1080p resolution in a 40-inch flat-panel LCD, Samsung’s 2007 model LNT4065F is a good choice. Besides offering full 1080p resolution the LNT4065F also features a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio for rich blacks and subltle tecture display, an 8ms response time panel for smooth motion, hidden side speakers, an NTSC tuner, and 3 HDMI ports.

    Compared to other Samsung Models
The primary differences between Samsung’s LNT4065F and the lower priced LNT4061F LCD HDTV is in the contrast ratio and video processing power. Where this model offers a 15,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio and a 10-bit video processor, the LNT4061F has a 10,000:1 ratio, with an 8-bit video processor. The LNT4065F should display finer gradients of shading making for more detail in darker scenes. The video processing difference should ensure smoother motion in fast moving scenes.

    Image Processing
The Samsung Digital Natural Image engine (DNIe) Video Enhancer refines all analog NTSC and wideband video inputs for an overall improvement in picture quality. DNIe improves contrast, white level, picture detail and incorporates digital noise reduction to improve lower quality video inputs. The 3D Y/C digital comb filter constantly analyzes the three dimensions of picture height, picture width, and picture changes-over-time to dramatically reduce edge image artifacts while improving transition detail.

    Audio Features
High-quality virtual surround sound can be experienced with just the speakers built into the TV. SRS TruSurround XT technology delivers an amazing, simulated 3D effect with clear dialog and powerful bass through hidden side speakers. TruSurround XT audio adds three audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

    • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
    • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
    • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.

    Excellent TV!

By  Jason Freeland (Atlanta GA, USA)

After reviewing the traffic at avsforums on this TV and its competitors, I decided to go with the LNT4065. There were several comments about HDMI issues and still some clouding issues were reported with this model, but I took the plunge anyway. I am very glad I did - the TV is incredible. It is a pleasure to watch and brings life to all the material I have viewed on it.
Some basics about my configuration - I have three sources that I view on this TV - a PC, an XBox connected via Monster component cables, and digital cable from comcast.
    Cable:
The SD material is surprisingly watchable, and HD content looks fantastic of course. For the first time in recorded history, my wife actually chose to sit on the couch and watch a baseball game for an hour because it was such a spectacular visual experience.
    PC:
Best computer monitor experience I have ever had bar none. Black levels not quite as good as the 19″ trinitrons I recently donated to goodwill. But in every other way, unbelievable. Digital photographs are miraculous.
    Xbox:
This was the real surprise. Games suck - not the tvs fault, its the lack of HD game content for the first gen xbox. But I primarily use the xbox as an A/V device with Xbox Media Center and when paired with this TV the experience is incredible. I purchased an Oppo 981 along with the TV and in side-by-side comparisons with the same SD-DVDs XBMC schooled the Oppo in upsampling quality. I was actually very surprised that the Oppo so clearly came in second place to XBMC - so much that I spent about a week scouring the internet for setting recommendations on the Oppo to make sure I wasn’t missing something. All I can say is that it will be a LONG time before I go out and upgrade all my DVD stuff to HD.

Some technical thoughts on the TV:
    - My TV displays some extremely minor clouding - we’re talking nit-pick bigtime here (thanks for the OCD avsforums…hehe). I only notice it when these three stars align: 1) the room is completely dark, 2)the TV is displaying the completely black desktop of the PC display, 3) the backlight is set above 6 of 10. I find the whites disturbingly bright above this backlight level though. I am currently enjoying the picture quality and the backlight is set to 3 on all inputs (typically watch in a shadowed to dark room).
    - The glossy screen may be distracting to some, but I find it very enjoyable. Even when you are watching the TV and are not consciously seeing any “reflections” I think the gloss causes the eye to perceive the TV as a glass plane instead of the typical screen door film texture of LCD - which strengthens the this TVs visual likeness to CRT displays. The same thing helps plasmas I think. Also, apparently this glossy coating has a component that also helps the contrast ratio or black levels or something - remember reading that somewhere.
    - Black levels are outstanding but shadow detail is still lost a bit. I am going to be honest - its very minimal but that is the only thing that remains a negative factor to the viewing experience. On DVD content the image transitions from the darks to black a bit too abruptly - instead of a smooth transition through the dark-color gradients. Put another way - imagine 10 is white and 0 is black with shades of gray in between. It appears as though the TV displays everything .5 and less as black. Maybe .25… not a distraction, but a very slight detraction - maybe results in my happiness being 4.85 stars out of 5. I will say that of all the LCD tvs I have viewed this TV handles blacks & shadows the best. It is definitely worth living with this minor flaw of LCD technology to get the perfection this TV exhibits in every other way.
    - This unit is the closest thing to Plasma as I believe you can get in an LCD tv at this time - without the unacceptable baggage that comes with plasma. I owned a 42″ plasma that I returned because I wasn’t interested in spending 3k on a TV and then having to live with the following crap: can’t lay the tv flat (ie lay the box on its side so it fits in back of your SUV); TV weighs 90 pounds even though its a “flat panel”; static images that are displayed on the screen for a couple hours become “ghosted” faintly in the plasma’s picture for the next couple days until the display phosphors loose the memory effect. Sure, the “burn-in” issue is fixed, but the ghosting thing is still real annoying. Whatever.

To summarize: I couldn’t be happier with this tv and feel it was well worth the purchase price. Amazon was a pleasure to buy from, and Eagle got the tv to me without any issues. A+

Full HD 1920 x 1080 panel resolution with over 2 million pixels8 (more than twice that of 720p HDTV) is exactly what you need to reproduce the 1080p content that can be delivered by our cutting edge 1080p Blu-ray disc player. And working with BRAVIA Engine EX everything from standard definition and high definition is upconverted to 1080p6 for a picture so real it’s like you’re actually there.

    10-bit Processing and 10-bit Display
While it’s great to state that a TV is capable of creating billions of colors it’s a whole lot better when you have a display that can actually display them. That’s the logic behind Sony’s 10-bit processor and 10-bit display. Sony follows 10-bit processing with a 10-bit panel, allowing 64 times the levels of color expression than an 8-bit panel. What that translates to is smoother transitions from color to color and subtle color changes faithfully reproduced.

BRAVIA Engine EX Full Digital Video Processor
The BRAVIA Engine EX full digital video processing system is based on Sony’s renowned BRAVIA Engine video processing system. It has all of the same functions of BRAVIA Engine plus the added ability to upconvert 480i standard definition signals via Digital Reality Creation Multi Function v1.0 technology for a picture with more detail and definition.

Live Color Creation System featuring WCG-CCFL
Decades of television know how allow us to realize that an LCD TV is more than just the panel; it’s actually a system. Uncompromised picture quality starts with combining carefully chosen components and circuits to optimize system quality, among these are the color creation and processing functions. That’s what Live Color Creation technology is all about. It starts with the BRAVIA Engine EX video processing system, which enhances primary colors and corrects half-tone colors for natural overall color. Next, a WCG-CCFL backlight using Sony’s phosphor formula delivers a specific spectrum of light designed to work with our specially formulated color filters. The combination of these three components creates deep, deep blues and natural greens for overall colors that draw you right into the picture.

    Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) Function
Sony’s Advanced Contrast Enhancer (ACE) builds on our excellent on-contrast ratio performance of 1600:11. A Dynamic Contrast Ratio of up to 13,000:12 is achieved by using real-time image processing to adjust the contrast along with optimizing backlight levels. But rather than focus on the “numbers”, Sony focuses on actual picture performance avoiding exaggerated blacks where detail can be lost. ACE translates to blacker blacks in darker scenes, as well as better shadow detail in other scenes for a difference that you can see.

24p True Cinema (24p Input Capability)
Many movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (fps) and prime time TV programs are video taped at 24p. Seizing on an opportunity, some studios are taking a purist approach and encoding high definition video content such as Blu-ray Disc in 24p. Sonywisely takes advantage of this by including 24p output capability on their BDP-S1 Blu-ray Disc player. It makes sense that select 2007 BRAVIA TVs will include 24p input capability. The benefit? Images are smooth and natural looking. Once you experience 24p video it will be hard to view video without it.

DMex - Ready (Digital Module Extender)
Sony’s Digital Media Extender (DMex) ready televisions offer a digital connection path for the addition of optional modules like the new BRAVIA Internet Video Link.7 With innovative DMex expansion capabilities featuring the Emmy award winning XMB user interface, select 2007 models are not merely TVs, but powerful entertainment platforms that not only meet your needs today, but expand easily to meet tomorrow’s needs as well.

    Xross Media Bar (XMB)
When was the last time you saw an on-screen display that was fast, fun and easy to use? Sony’s award-winning Xross Media Bar (pronounced Cross) interface provides a logical and fast way to access set up menus, user controls, and more. The on-screen display comes to life by pushing the XMB menu button on the remote. Navigation through the menus is smooth and fast.

    BRAVIA Theatre Sync
Sony created BRAVIA Theatre Sync to go beyond basic digital audio and video transmission. Based on the HDMI-CEC function. BRAVIA Theatre Sync will be included on select BRAVIA Theatre home A/V systems and components. This useful function reduces the hassle and time consuming job of powering up, routing signals, etc. to the simple push of one button. Sony calls this nifty feature BRAVIA Theatre Sync. Here’s how it works. Want to play a DVD on your Sony A/V system? Easy, just push PLAY on the BRAVIA HDTV remote and everything is taken care of for you. Even when the system is off! Want to change from TV sound to digital surround sound through your Sony BRAVIA Theatre A/V system? Just one push of the Theater Sound button on the remote and voila, surround sound through your system. Want to power down everything once you’ve finished enjoying it? Push one button and the TV and A/V system powers down. BRAVIA Theatre Sync helps make things a whole lot easier to operate.

    S-Force Front Surround-2
Built around a sophisticated set of Sony algorithms, the S-Force Front Surround enhancement function generates realistic surround sound from the two speakers in the TV. Unlike some other “virtual surround” technologies, sound does not need to be bounced off of side walls or other surfaces to hear three-dimensional sound. No matter what the size or shape of the room it’s possible to hear sounds from behind you.

    HDMI and PC Connectivity
Designed for maximum versatility, Sony’s BRAVIA V-Series LCD TVs are equipped with a comprehensive range of input interfaces. HDMI (High-Definition Multimedia Interface) is the first industry-supported, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface. HDMI technology supports enhanced or High Definition video, together with multi-channel digital audio to provide superb image and sound reproduction. BRAVIA V-Series TVs include (3) HDMI 1080/60p inputs. The PC input 4(HD-15-pin) offers easy connection to your PC, allowing you to use your high resolution BRAVIA V-Series Digital TV as a computer monitor.

    ATSC Integrated Tuner
Receive local, over-the-air digital broadcasts of high-definition network programming; no set top box or monthly fee required.

    VESA-compatible Mounting Holes
Free up space. Mount your television on the wall with confidence; attaches to optional VESA-compatible wall-mounting brackets (sold separately).

Picture quality is excellent, especially in high def.

Sound quality is very good without a home theater setup. Not always the case with flat panel TVs with small bezels.

Remote is well laid out and easy to use (although it does lack backlighting, but I have no trouble finding the buttons I want in the dark). It’s easy to change between the 4 programmable picture settings or screen aspect ratios. Sleep timer button is right up on top when your ready for bed and is in 15 minute increments.

It has 2 HDMI inputs for easy connection of compatible devices and several other inputs. You can customize the display to choose between only the inputs you are using and label them appropriately (so it’s easy to switch between my TiVo, DVD player, TV and cable box, and hide the other inputs)

There’s a zillion other settings that I haven’t figured out all of yet, but most are relatively intuitive (except PnP, which has me baffled so far).

I got the flat panel LCD because it uses less power and generates less heat than a plasma, and won’t burn-in (although plasmas have improved). The screen doesn’t reflect as much, and has a wide viewing angle.

For viewing from about 6 feet, the 40″ size is perfect.

Lots of other things I could say about this TV, but it’s all good. You can’t go wrong with this model. Also highly rated in Consumer Reports, the consumer’s bible…

Excellent picture! The next challenge is to get a sound system that matches the picture

    5.0 out of 5 stars Here’s what it does., August 5, 2007

By  M. Strahan “Weatherman” (Florida) - See all my reviews
    (REAL NAME)

This receiver does a great job. It replaced a 7 yr old Denon 1601 that quit working one night. It drives my 5.1 Polk system at least as good as the older Denon, which always sounded great. At this price, good sound quality is probably a given, so this review is more about the features that set this unit apart. Let’s talk video first.

The nice thing about the video processing is that you can hook anything up to it, and it will send the video feed to your TV through one cable. Its basically a big switch, letting you easily change between A/V sources. You just leave your TV on the input through which it is connected, and it feeds the TV whatever source you pick, and sends the audio through the speakers. I hooked up my Samsung DLPSamsung HL-S5688W 56″ 1080p DLP HDTV to it via the HDMI output. I used the two HDMI inputs to connect my Samsung DVD player and my Comcast Motorola HD-DVR. I also hooked up my Samsung VCR through a composite input and RCA cables for the VCR’s audio. The Onkyo basically passes anything its sent through the HDMI inputs out through the HDMI output. You don’t get any upconverting if you use the HDMI inputs and are outputting via HDMI. If you feed it 1080i through the HMDI inputs, it will output 1080i. Feed it 1080p, and you get 1080p output. (I’ve set my DVR and DVD players to send it 1080 input.) This is not true of the component inputs. It will send those inputs out as 720p, even if you feed it 1080. Just use the HDMI inputs for your 1080 sources. If you have more than two 1080 sources, this Onkyo might not be for you, since it only has two HDMI(1080 capable) inputs. I guess you could get an HDMI switch HDMI 3 Ports Switch With Remote (or some other brand) if you needed it in the future, or just watch your third HD input (video game, maybe) at 720p, or maybe your TV has another HDMI input itself. Another oddity is that it won’t send digital sound out the HDMI that you associate with the component video inputs. This is only a problem if you need the TV to produce sound. I use the 5.1 speakers for all sound, so I don’t care. The video it outputs seems to be a little better looking than video straight from the source, but I’m not sure its noticably different.

(A word on upconverting of video. Its just interpolation. Upconverting tries to add lines were there were not lines in the original source. Its not going to make SDTV look like HDTV. It might make it look a little better, but its in the eye of the beholder, and some sources seem to look better upconverted than others. Too me, it isn’t worth much. My DVR can upconvert, as can my DVD player and even my TV. I’ve tried them all, and don’t think any of them can improve an SDTV picture much. If you want to try this receiver’s upconverting, there’s a hidden menu to turn on upconverting 480 HDMI input to 720p, but it will also make it downgrade 1080 HDMI input to 720p. Holding down the aux and power buttons will activate the hidden menu. I leave it off, which is called auto mode, but have my DVR upconvert 480 to 1080 before it sends it to the Onkyo. Other things in the hidden menu are standard video settings like sharpness, contrast, etc.)

I also like the remote. Its fairly small, yet controls all my equipment very well, even the Comcast/Motorola DVR. My wife has put away all the other remotes, so that’s a good sign. She can operate the entire system with the included Onkyo remote. My 65 year old parents even figured out how to use the entire system, so the remote must be pretty good. It helps that the Onkyo’s switching simplifies everything so much. Another feature that is nice is the front panel inputs. You can hook up your digital camera very easily that way. It even has an optical audio input on the front.

The setup is pretty straight forward, especially if you have some experience setting up home theaters. If not, the manual explains things well enough, and a little Internet reading will get you all the way there, if you are like me and enjoy tinkering with the settings. The onscreen display is great. You do have to use the menu system on the front panel to tell it to output the setup menu via the HDMI, otherwise the blank screen will frustrate you. The Audessey auto-speaker calibration does a fairly decent job of configuring your system for your room, measuring distance and equalizing the volume, setting timings and equalizing sounds. I think I improved it by using the manual 5 band equalizers, though. I thought my center speaker sounded flat, so I tinkered with the equalizer and am much happier. I tried messing around with Audessey’s crossover settings, but couldn’t improve them any, though. Audessey also correctly set up the speaker distances.

One main reason I bought this thing was the future proofing features. It has the Dolby TrueHD and the DTS-HD, so if those every come out I can use them. I can also upgrade to a 7.1 speaker system, but my living room really isn’t configured to handle that many speakers. It also offers I-pod connectivity and XM and Sirrius satellite radio connectivity, should I ever want those.

Some common complaints I’ve read are speaker popping noises and that it runs hot, and some people think that overheating causes the popping. I don’t have the popping problems, and I don’t think it runs too much hotter than my older Denon. I have it in a decently ventilated cabinet, though. I don’t think it would do well in a closed up cabinet without any airflow. My ventilation is simply a crack at the bottom front, and at the top back. Hot air rises out the top back, pulling in cool air from the front bottom. I have about 6 inches of space between the receiver and the top of the cabinet. The receiver is a bit tall, so you should measure your space before your buy it. Make sure you can allow for this ventilation space on top of it.

Lastly, I like some of the many different listening “modes”. Dolby Prologic IIx is better than the old Prologic on my Denon. It improves the surround effects of non-DD or non-DTS TV shows. It has the 5-channel stereo that I liked so well in the Denon, too. The other modes seem like gimmicks, though. It does do a good job of picking the appropriate mode, but you can also tell it what to use as a default mode for each source. For example, if the TV feed is in DD or DTS, it uses DD or DTS, but if its in Prologic, you can specify to use Prologic II cinema. However, if your TV show is a concert, you can change it to Prologic II music.

In summary, the Onkyo will simplify your system, allows for future expansion, is easy to use, sounds great, and costs less than anything else out there with this feature set. I recommend it.
